(The Mill Tower's) Kvarntornet's name is known since the early 1600's. The Danish historian James Langebek mentions in his diary from 1753-1754 he visited in Visby, Kvarntornet and saw "three stories, all were filled with hand mills in which citizens maids Ground malt and grain." Medieval towers with similar usage existed in several German cities, including in Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl. In the 1800s, snuff was ground in a modest factory that had been set up in the Left Tower. The tower was half-round shape. In Visby the tower type alien. It is however common in the Baltic States.
The Kvarntornet was built in the old wall, before the wall was raised. In addition to the tower in Söderport has no tower so vell-worked stone and so smooth shift assets Kvarntornet.
